History
One year after the creation of the Institute of Animal Science, there was a need of making available the results of agricultural science related to tropical animal production, as well as the scientific and technical advances, systems, technologies, and relevant knowledge obtained in this field by Cuban scientists and collaborators from other countries, to the scientific community, professors, students, and producers. Therefore, at the end of 1966, the decision was made to create, promote, and develop the publishing and dissemination activities of the knowledge that was being developed through various media.
Thus, in 1967, the first issue of the Cuban Journal of Agricultural Science (CJAS) and its Spanish version, the Revista Cubana de Ciencia Agrícola (RCCA), appeared as a means of scientific dissemination and a reference source for all those interested in animal production. Since then, it has been published uninterruptedly and has managed to maintain a stable publication frequency and its presence in prestigious international databases and indexes. The journal is read online in more than 160 countries.
Until September 2025, 59 volumes have been published. Up to 2022, there were 4 issues per year, and starting in 2023, the journal became a continuous publication, removing issues. Nowadays, more than 2,795 papers have been published, distributed across the 7 thematic sections of the journal. The contribution of foreign authors has increased over time and, since 2010, exceeded 43%. In addition, book reviews, doctoral theses summaries, event information, and announcements of interest to the agricultural scientific community have been published. Four special issues were also published, containing 23 review articles and 25 conferences.
In addition, from its origin up to the second issue in 2009, the journal remained in printed format. Starting with issue 43:3, its edition began in digital format. Since March 2010, it has been hosted on Open Journal Systems.
The Editorial Committee, composed of national and international figures, remains in place. Articles are subject to an open peer review, along with a specialist in Biomathematics. Style review and translation are carried out by qualified staff with extensive professional experience. As a result of the journal's work, the International Meeting of Editors of Scientific and Informative Journals has been held every two years since 1996, allowing editors of scientific journals from a wide variety of disciplines to exchange experiences.
